Ways to change limiting beliefs

Changing Limiting Beliefs

When we really think about it, how many of us actually live in the present, and how many of us live in the past or in the future? It’s a tough one…but not really if we understand how it works.

What if we then start to challenge this type of thinking? Is it possible to change? Is it possible to make the step into believing that we are capable of such change? I think it’s totally possible.

The infographic above, shows some of the strategies I started developing to change my limiting beliefs into something that changed my life for the better. But remember, it’s an ongoing process that doesn’t just stop. It’s a journey, where going with the flow, rather than resisting it, worked out better for me.

Being able to make this transition, takes courage. It takes strength which most people find difficult because change isn’t something we like to do (although some of us are okay with change).

Personally, I’ve always embraced change. I love starting at the bottom and working my way up again. I think that’s why I love travelling around developing countries. I never found it hard to find joy in small things.

Time

Often changing our belief system, involves stepping outside our comfort zone which can make us feel awkward and different. Because of this, we procrastinate and put stuff off. Maybe we have been living for a long time worrying about what happened in the past, or spending hours on end worrying about what could happen in the future. Whichever one it is, we have to stop and ask ourselves at some point, is this way of thinking doing us justice, or are we a slave to it?

celebrate small goals

Often we wait until something big happens to celebrate any kind of success. But celebrating smaller goals, can be just as satisfying. Just swapping out something like carbonated water with lime, instead of energy drinks and cola, was a goal for me. We are all different, so choosing to celebrate something small in our lives is based on our unique, individual situation.

Accept and move on

Changing limiting beliefs is possible. I’m a walking example of it.. sometimes. Yeah, it’s not easy. Old habits die hard as some would say. But the more we engage with those old habits, the more we will succumb to that way of thinking. There is no point blaming ourselves for not changing something sooner when we can change something right now!

Small steps

It’s also really important to note, that we don’t just magically get up in the morning one day, and everything is great. Change takes time, and understanding our thoughts is a big part of it. For personal development, it’s good to take small steps towards change, and celebrate each small step along the way.

Push worry aside

Sometimes a ‘gift horse’ could be staring us in the face but for some reason, but we don’t take it. What I mean by this, is that when an opportunity literally knocks down the bloody door, we don’t answer it.

It’s scary, it’s often weird, but it’s worth it! Just give it a go in whatever circumstance you find yourself in, and try. Because you may just find out, you’re more capable than what you have been led to believe or think.

I should probably stop writing in riddles as I don’t want to confuse anyone, so I’ll try to put it simply – If we are given an opportunity to improve our lives for the better, we should take it. But, we also should not just wait for something to magically appear. We have to create our own solutions as well. It’s about finding a good balance.

It’s kind of like being in charge of your journey, but at the same time, going along with the flow of life and developing an acceptance that things will work out.

appreciate the little things

Too often in life, we can miss the really cool little things around us. The simple things in life are pushed aside for greater and more perceived satisfying things. But something that has really been highlighted in 2020, is the fact that many of those ‘bigger’ things we appreciated, aren’t so important now.

the illusion of perfection

For many years, I struggled with trying to be perfect. But there isn’t such a thing, and nor should there be. We are all living in a world where we are trying to reach some sort of ‘perfection’. All this does is create more stress for ourselves, and possibly end up stopping us from achieving the things we want out of the fear they won’t ‘be perfect enough’.

Don’t put something off just because you’re afraid or you think no one will believe in you. All you have to do is just try and give it a go.

A Five-Step Process

For an easy strategy on how to release limiting beliefs, check out this article by Mike Bundrant, Co-Founder of the iNLP Centre. It provides detailed information on how our subconscious thought patterns, can be challenged, and then sorted out. The article provides a step-by-step process called the A-B-C-D-E process, to help identify a limiting belief trap, and then freeing ourselves from it using the technique. This process can then be applied to other areas of life where we may feel stuck, making it not only easy, but very handy.
