They are my top strategies and the ones I use on a regular basis. Have I solved the problem of sleep? No. But I’ll continue to work with that thing we call \u2018sleep\u2019 and do what\u2019s best for me, in my situation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem; letter-spacing: 0rem;\" data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3>1. Exercise early\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20473\" src=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9-160x80.jpg 160w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/2-9-600x300.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p><p>If you\u2019re like me, you find relief for your \u2018overactive\u2019 brain through exercise. Although this doesn\u2019t always guarantee a great night\u2019s sleep, it does help burn off some energy. It also makes me feel good, so it’s my top strategy as it has many benefits, other than just sleep.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">My top form of exercise is walking especially in nature or near water. I’ll try to walk somewhere like a local park or beach. This way I can take my shoes off. If I can’t get to a park or beach, hitting the pavement, does the trick.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Hot yoga used to be a\u00a0favourite\u00a0but increased the \u2018activity\u2019 in my brain. As much as I loved it, a class late in the day or evening, made sleep worse. For that reason, exercising, no matter what type, works better for me if I do it earlier in the day.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3>2. Meditation\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20474\" src=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10-160x80.jpg 160w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/3-10-600x300.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p><p>A lot of adults with ADHD find meditation hard. Yes. I’m one of those adults but I still try.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-size: 0.875rem; letter-spacing: 0rem;\">I find that a very structured body scan meditation works best for me. This is because it specifically tells me what part of the body to focus on. Our body produces it naturally when that beautiful thing called the sun, starts to set.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>If our eyes are exposed to screens and TV all day, and then right before bed, it can wreak havoc with our sleep cycle. I find using lamps and dim lighting in the bedroom and bathroom essential. It\u2019s like hacking your brain so it doesn\u2019t think it\u2019s time to wake up. Instead, it signals to your brain that it\u2019s time to wind down.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>I try to stay away from my phone screen right before sleep but I still find this very difficult and have to be super disciplined. Trust me, you won’t find any judgment here on that! \u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-13208 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/blue-light-683x1024.png\" alt=\"How Blue Light can Affect our Health by Gutidentity - Emma Bailey\" width=\"683\" height=\"1024\" \/><\/p><h3>4. My gut health has taken centre stage so, if it\u2019s natural, bring it on! I do take a melatonin and magnesium supplement each night. \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>I also eat foods high in magnesium like almonds and bananas. It\u2019s not uncommon to see me nibbling on a banana and nuts late at night. Whatever works for you, just do it!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3>5. Sensory hacks\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3><h3><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20486\" src=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6-160x80.jpg 160w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/6-6-600x300.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/>\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3><h4><strong>SOUND<\/strong><\/h4><p>I <b>CANNOT <\/b>sleep in a dead quiet room. The silence is deafening. That\u2019s when the fan and body scan app come into play.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Now I know some people prefer white noise apps so again, do what works for you. I also don\u2019t mind the aircon machine sound as long as it all goes on for as long as it takes me to fall asleep.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>If the sound or noise stops shortly after I’ve drifted off to la-la land, I <b>WILL <\/b>wake up. This then stuffs up my sleep cycle which could leave me awake for the next sleep cycle of 1.5 hours.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>Separate bedrooms and kicking your furry friends (pets, wink wink) out of the room can help with that although this is often easier said than done.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h4><strong>SOUND + SMELL<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h4><p>I use an\u00a0ioniser\u00a0every night to aid sleep. This is a plug-in device that pumps out steam. It\u2019s great for essential oils like lavender but also eucalyptus if I have a cold or allergies.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>My ioniser\u00a0goes for 7 hours bubbling away which I find soothing and relaxing.\u00a0 Again, this could be adjusted to suit, or not used altogether if it makes you visit the porcelain throne too much. Do what works!\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h4><strong>TOUCH<\/strong><\/h4><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20490\" src=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5-160x80.jpg 160w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/7-5-600x300.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p><p>Again, this is highly\u00a0individualised. I use a weighted blanket after years of being like the ‘princess and the pea’, but in reverse. My side of the bed used to look like an Eskimo was sleeping under it, while my husband keeps the same bed cover all year round.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><p>I invested in a weighted blanket a couple of years back. I totally recommend them!\u00a0<\/p><p>Buy a good quality one as it\u2019s worth the investment. They are perfect for getting the weight without overheating.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3>6. Alcohol\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3><p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-20494\" src=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1000\" height=\"500\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3.jpg 1000w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3-300x150.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3-150x75.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3-768x384.jpg 768w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3-700x350.jpg 700w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3-160x80.jpg 160w, https:\/\/gutidentity.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/8-3-600x300.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1000px) 100vw, 1000px\" \/><\/p><p>Straight up!\u00a0 \u00a0You won’t get judgement here.\u00a0 But, I do know how easy it is to slip into this little chestnut.\u00a0<\/p><p>As great as alcohol is for calming the inner storm, I find it completely screws with my sleep.\u00a0<\/p><p>Sure, I can fall asleep in a matter of seconds but I guarantee, I’ll be awake at 3 am needing the toilet. Can I get back to sleep after that? Usually, NO.\u00a0<\/p><p>The quality of my sleep is also affected which impacts the next day.\u00a0 Another drawback of using alcohol for sleep is that it can affect appetite and food choices the following day.\u00a0<\/p><p>Alcohol can also leave you dehydrated, clumsy, and… grumpy as *#%! the next day, making it super fun for those around you.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p><h3>Do what works for you and your situation\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/h3><p>This list is certainly NOT exhaustive. As said before, these are the strategies that work for <b>ME<\/b>. Everyone is <b>unique <\/b>and living situations vary greatly from person to person.\u00a0<\/p><p>At the end of the day (excuse the pun), <b>YOU <\/b>have to work with what you\u2019ve got!\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section elementor-top-section elementor-element elementor-element-66bb692 elementor-section-boxed elementor-section-height-default elementor-section-height-default\" data-id=\"66bb692\"
